Well-known educational researchers emphasize this point when they describe what is at the heart of formative assessment: Formative assessment, therefore, is essentially feedback (Armadas, 1983) both to the teachers and to the pupil about present understanding and skill placement in order to determine the way forward (Harlan James, 1997, p, 369). Deformation assessment] refers to assessment that is specifically intended to provide feedback on performance to improve and accelerate learning (Sadler, 1998, p. 77). An assessment is formative to the extent that information from the assessment is fed back within the System and actually used to improve the performance of the system in some way [William Alley, 2007, p. 31). Formative assessment is defined as assessment carried out during the instructional process for the purpose of improving teaching or learning.. What makes formative assessment formative is that it is immediately used to make adjustments so as to form new learning (Sheppard, 2008, p. 281). The common thread woven throughout formative assessment research, articles, and books bears repeating: it is not the instrument that is formative; it is the use of the information gathered, by whatever means, to adjust teaching and learning, that merits the formative label (Figure I . 1). Aggregative Assessment Gorham and informal processes teachers and students use to gather evidence for the purpose of improving learning In the classroom we assess formally through assignments, tests, quizzes, performances, projects, and surveys; or informally through questioning and dialogue, observing, and anecdotal note taking. In any of these instances, we may or may not be engaged in formative assessment: the determining factor is not the type of assessment we use, but rather Howe and our students use the information. Summation Assessment When the information from an assessment is used solely to make a judgment about level of competence or achievement, it is a summation assessment (Figure 1. 2). At the classroom level, an assessment is summation when it is given to determine how much students have learned at a particular point in time, for the purpose of communicating achievement status to others. Assessments that provide evidence of student achievement for the purpose of making a judgment about student competence or program effectiveness usually takes the form of a symbol, a letter grade or number, or a comparison to a standard such as Meets the Standard or Proficient, that is reported to students and eventually to parents. Sometimes an assessment intended to be used formatively can be used cumulatively, such as when the evidence indicates hat students have attained mastery. And sometimes an assessment intended to be used cumulatively can be used formatively, such as when a test reveals significant problems with learning that we address through reattaching. At the program level, an assessment is summation when results are used to make judgments such as determining how many students are and are not meeting standards in a certain subject for purposes of accountability. The data may be reported to educators within the system, the school board, and the community, Summation assessments arent bad or wrong. Thefts just not formative: they eve a different purpose?to report out level of achievement, Misleading them as formative will not cause them to generate the achievement gains noted in research studies. Aggregative or Summation? An important reason to distinguish between formative and summation assessment is that achievement gains credited to formative assessment practices will not materialize unless certain conditions are met, and at least some of these conditions are often not met by assessments whose primary purpose is summation. To what extent is Of Mice and Men more effective t Essay han Rainman in giving us understandings of loneliness and friendshipSteinbecks novel Of Mice and Men cannot accurately be compared in effectiveness of its themes with the movie Rainman. The importance of each theme differs in both- in Steinbecks novel, loneliness is the most dominant theme, and in Rainman the major theme is friendship. Levinson and Steinbeck both do a brilliant job at showing the major themes in both materials to the greatest of their potential, and the minor themes are somewhat overpowered because of this. One extremely clever way that Steinbeck has more effectively conveyed the theme of loneliness to the reader is by never letting the characters develop or change in Of Mice and Men. Very early in the novel we are introduced to George and Lennie as they are about to start new jobs on the ranch. The reader is made aware directly that Lennie has a mental disability, and really has no attachment to anyone or anything except George. Lennies disability never alters, and he only cares for George. George is also never developed in the story. He feels greatly burdened by the responsibility of caring for Lennie. On page 7, he says, I could get along so easy and nice if I didnt have you on my tail. George almost wishes that he could lead a normal life; not the one hes living now. This mindset of wishing for more than he has continues throughout the novel. As well as wishing to not have to look after Lennie, he and Lennie share a common wish- to one day own their own land. Although George is a lot less enthusiastic (and a lot more realistic) about achieving this, he still longs for it. Its still something he hopes can be accomplished in his lifetime. Through the main characters thinking and acting the same for the course of the story, it doesnt give the reader any window of opportunity to bond or become closer to them- therefore escalating the overall feeling of loneliness much more effectively than Rainman does. The character development in Rainman is much more obvious. One of the main characters, Charlie, is extremely materialistic and self absorbed when we are first introduced to him. Throughout the course of the story we view major changes in his attitude and ways of thinking. An example of such an instance would be in the beginning of the story. We are shown Charlies ignorant, narrow minded way of thinking towards Rays disability, and as the story continues, Charlies thoughts towards Ray, and how he perceives his mental condition drastically change. By the end of the movie, we see to the full extent of how Charlies way of thinking and life in general have been changed and affected by Ray. Because of the actions of Charlie throughout the movie, and the way his character has developed, the writer does not accurately portray the theme of loneliness. This is because the viewer is shown and made aware of the growing love and friendship that develops between Ray and Charlie. The main characters, however, are not the only characters who have limited change and growth in Steinbecks novel. Crooks, the black man, is a prime example. He has to live in the harness room, away from the other men. Because racism was socially acceptable in the books time frame, he was isolated and degraded. This was a constant in the novel. He was referred to as Nigger constantly, and was even verbally assaulted by Curleys Wife- a character who was also slandered and labelled, but because of her gender. Well, you keep your place then, Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it aint even funny. pg 85. None of the characters change their opinion on Crooks in the novel- hes always the crippl ed old Nigger. Of Mice and Men has limited development in the characters thoughts towards other characters, which more effectively fuels the sense of detachment and loneliness. This heightens the feeling of loneliness much more than Rainman does, because in Levinsons movie the minor characters also grow and show some development as the plot continues. The minor character Susanna, from Rainman, shows major changes in her mindset towards Ray by the end of the movie. Looking back in the film to when she is initially introduced to Ray, she extended her kindness towards him only as a means of keeping the peace between the two brothers, rather then through a genuine wish to make him feel welcome. As the story evolves, Susannas friendship towards Ray becomes something of her own free will rather then a forced gesture. This limited setting change gives Steinbeck a solid foundation, from which he can build upon to effectively portray loneliness to the reader through other means- such as the characters. This works excellently, because in Rainman, the backdrop is constantly changing, and this presents the viewer with a broad range of changing scenery. By having restricted setting change in Of Mice and Men, it lets the reader focus fully on the more important things, and therefore the themes are presented more efficiently. An additional theme that both these pieces share is the theme of friendship. Of Mice and Men, however, is nowhere near as effective in presenting this theme as Rainman is. Levinson lets us watch as Charlie and Ray go from not knowing each other, to forming a deep bond with one another. This development in their characters reels us further into the story, and the journey. Through the growth and change we can clearly see in Charlie and Ray, the theme of friendship is much more successfully displayed in Rainman. Because of Steinbecks intention to expand on the theme of loneliness, the friendship that George and Lennie have is left in the background. Rather then concentrating on the strong bond between the two, he instead chooses to pounce on the flaws which other characters possess. This, in turn, makes the reader somewhat forget about the special friendship of George and Lennie. Because both of these characters were never developed, the reader doesnt feel a part of their relationship. This pushes George and Lennies friendship even further out of the readers mind- making it very hard for them to identify with it. This greatly differs from the presentation of this theme in Rainman. The journey- both physically and emotionally- portray the theme of friendship much more effectively, through its gradual change. The physical journey, that is, the trip from Rays institute to Charlies car company, invites the viewer to see the bond that slowly develops throughout the film between Charlie and Ray. If this part of the plot never came to be, it would be extremely hard for the viewer to identify with their growing friendship. Because of the car trip, the viewer feels like they are right there with Charlie and Ray- through the good times and the bad- and feels extremely close to them. We bond with the characters and truly embrace the friendship they eventually possess. This varies from Of Mice and Men, because George and Lennies friendship was a constant, and like many other things in the novel, never changed. This factor isolated the reader away, which in effect amplified the sense of loneliness, rather than friendship. The emotional journey of Charlie and Ray also effectively showed the viewer the theme of friendship. Through meeting Ray, Charlie transformed himself spiritually into everything Ray needed- a loving, caring companion. Ray also changed slightly- which is amazing for an autistic person who bases their lives around routine and familiarity. By developing the characters personalities and thoughts on one another, the viewer is taken on the journey of change too. In Of Mice and Men, the reader is looking down on the happenings at the ranch, rather than being in the heart of the action. These differences overall portray the theme of friendship a lot more effectively in Rainman than in Of Mice and Men. In conclusion, the differing importance of loneliness and friendship in both pieces make it extremely difficult to say exactly how effective Of Mice and Men is in conveying these themes to the reader, in comparison with Rainman. Initially, superficial comparisons are made about each conveying a n equal amount of significance for both of the themes. However, after exploring what the major and minor themes were in the novel and film, and how both Steinbeck and Levinson efficiently portrayed only their major theme, it is easy to see that these two cannot be effectively compared to one another because of these differences.

There is no reason for a person to suffer such treatment for being accused of being a "puritan" and so the characters pranks at his expense are more mean than their playfulness suggests. Wishing for Olivia's love and to be more than his current rank and his continuous disapproval of Sir Toby and Sir Andrew's drinking, earns him their hatred and quickly becomes their pawn in a complex romantic ruse. At first I thought the prank was funny and was just to have a little laugh. Sending a letter telling Malvolio that Olivia loves him and that if he wants to make her happy he should do certain foolish things such as wear yellow stockings is the kind of harmless prank we see often enough in our society. If the prank would of ended there it would of been just fine but since they want further and they locked him and tied up in a dark chamber for excuse saying he had gone mad. I don't believe anyone shoul d be locked in a chamber like that even less when they didn't do anything wrong and even worst they accused him of being mad. Malvolio doesn't deserve none of this all his done was be pretty boring and maybe a bit ill mannered which I don't think is all that bad, and they could of at least tried to talk to him about it if it bothered them so much. At the end, Malvolio is released and he leaves threatening to have revenge on the whole pack of them. I don't think he overreacted because I probably would of done something like that. This leaves a loose and in the plot because we don't know what will happen with him, he might just leave and never come back or not leave at all but ...

Theories Of Deviant Behavior

Theories Of Deviant Behavior Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychology. I intend to explain Freuds theory about the libido and how it changes its object, a process designed by the concept of sublimation. He argued that humans are born polymorphously perverse (AROPA, 2010), meaning that any number of objects could be a source of pleasure. Lawrence Kohlberg is known for writing The Six Stages of Moral Reasoning (Crain, 1985, pp. 118-136). These stages are planes of moral adequacy conceived to explain the development of moral reasoning and why these stages can lead to deviant behavior. I intend to scope all six stages and explain them in detail. In the end, from my explanation, one should be able to identify certain behaviors and where they stem from. Cesare Lombroso popularized the notion of the born criminal through biological determinism, claiming that criminals have particular physical attributes or deformities. If criminality was inherited, then the born criminal could be distinguished by physical atavistic stigmata. I intend to explain this theory in detail along with a few other concepts in order to properly broaden the topic so one can grasp its true meaning. Robert Mertons theory on deviance stems from his 1938 analysis of the relationship between culture, structure and anomie. Merton defines culture as an organized set of normative values governing behavior which is common to members of a designated society or group (Crain, 1985 pp 118-136). I intend to relate this theory to other theorists related to this field of study. I will define how one can become deviant through his/her surroundings. Each theorist has stated that deviance provides a way in which some individuals and groups can introduce their agendas to the rest of society, and elevate their own personal status while doing it (AROPA, 2010 pp 1-2). If that is the case then deviance is a violation of a norm; while crime is defined as a violation one specific type of norm, a law. By definition then, it would seem that society considers all crime to be deviant behavior. However, members of society may not consider a specific crime to be deviant at all. Sigmund Freud Stages of Development Freud advanced a theory of personality development that centered on the effects of the sexual pleasure drive on the individual psyche. At particular points in the developmental process, he claimed, a single body part is particularly sensitive to sexual, erotic stimulation (Stevenson, 1996 pp 2-3). These erogenous zones are the mouth, the anus, and the genital region. The childs libido centers on behavior affecting the primary erogenous zone of his age; he cannot focus on the primary erogenous zone of the next stage without resolving the developmental conflict of the immediate one. A child at a given stage of development has certain needs and demands, such as the need of an infant to nurse. Frustration occurs when these needs are not met; overindulgence stems from such a meeting of these needs that the child is reluctant to progress beyond the stage. Both frustration and overindulgence lock some amount of the childs libido permanently into the stage in which they occur; both result in a fixation (Stevenson, 1996 pp. 2-3). If a child progresses normally through the stages, resolving each conflict and moving on, then little libido remains invested in each stage of development. However, if he/she fixates at a particular stage, the method of obtaining satisfaction which characterized the stage will dominate and affect his/her adult personality. The Oral Stage The oral stage begins at birth, when the oral cavity is the primary focus of libidal energy. The infant preoccupies themselves with nursing, with the pleasure of sucking and accepting things into the mouth. The infant who is frustrated at this stage, because the mother refused to nurse him/her on demand or who ended nursing sessions early, is characterized by pessimism, envy, suspicion and sarcasm (Stevenson, 1996 pp 4-5). The overindulged oral character, whose nursing urges were always and often excessively satisfied, is optimistic, gullible, and is full of admiration for others around him/her (Stevenson, 1996 pp.4-5). The stage ends in the primary conflict of weaning, which both deprives the child of the sensory pleasures of nursing and of the psychological pleasure of being cared for and mothered. The stage lasts approximately one and one-half years. Anal Stage At one and one-half years, the child will enter the anal stage. The act of toilet training becomes the childs obsession with the erogenous zone of the anus and with the retention or expulsion of the feces. This represents a classic conflict between the id, which derives pleasure from expulsion of bodily wastes, and the ego and superego, which represent the practical and societal pressures to control the bodily functions (Stevenson, 1996 pp 5-6). The child will meet the conflict between the parents demands and the childs desires in one of two ways: Either he puts up a fight or he simply refuses to use expel the waste. The child who wants to fight takes pleasure in expelling maliciously, often just after being placed on the toilet. If the parents are too lenient and the child manages to derive pleasure and success from this expulsion, it will result in the formation of an anal expulsive character (Stevenson, 1996 pp 5-6). This character is generally messy, disorganized, reckless, carel ess, and defiant. However, a child may choose to retain feces, thereby disobeying his/her parents while enjoying the pleasurable pressure of the built-up feces on his/her intestine. If this tactic succeeds and the child is overindulged, he will develop into an anal retentive character (Stevenson, 1996 pp. 5-6). This character is neat, precise, orderly, careful, stingy, withholding, obstinate, meticulous, and passive-aggressive. This stage lasts from one and one-half to two years approximately. Phallic Stage From ages three to six, the setting for the greatest sexual conflict happens in the phallic stage. With the genital region becoming the weapon of choice, as the phallic stage matures, boys experience the Oedipus complex whereas girls experience the Electra complex. These complexes involve the inherent urge to remove our same-sexed parent so to possess our opposite-sexed parent (Psychosexual, 2010 pp 1) In boys, the father stands in the way of the increasingly sexual love for his mother. What controls this urge to eliminate the father is the fear that his father will remove their common appendage, the penis. The easiest way to resolve castration anxiety of the phallic stage is to imitate the father, which in the long-term acts as a voice of restraint in his adult life. The female counterparts in the phallic stage suffer from penis envy. The female child holds her mother accountable for not sharing the appendage that her brother wants to remove from their father. Unlike the male counte rparts, Freud remained unclear how the phallic stage is resolved. Fixation at the phallic stage develops a person who is reckless, resolute, self-assured, and narcissistic and is excessively vain and proud. The failure to resolve the conflict can also cause a person to be afraid or incapable of close love; Freud also hinted that fixation could be a root cause of homosexuality (Psychosexual, 2010 pp 1). Id, Ego, and Superego Freud saw the human personality as having three aspects, which work together to produce all of our complex behaviors. These are described as the t Id, the Ego and the Superego. All three components need to be well-balanced in order to have reasonable mental health. However, the Ego has a difficult time dealing with the competing demands of the Superego and the Id. According to the psychoanalytic view, this psychological conflict is an intrinsic and pervasive part of human experience (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2). The conflict between the Id and Superego, negotiated by the Ego, is one of the normal psychological battles all people face. The way in which a person characteristically resolves the instant gratification vs. longer-term reward dilemma reflects upon their character (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2). The id can be described as the functions of the irrational and emotional part of the mind. This part of psychology is very self-serving and uncaring towards others needs. This is very true of an infant since their only desire to be satisfied and served. In addition, this phase can be applied to childhood since children are also very self-serving and seek constant gratification. The Ego functions with the rational part of the mind. The Ego develops out of awareness that one cant always receive what they desire. The Ego operates in a world of reality. The Ego realizes the need for compromise and negotiates between the Id and the Superego. The Egos job is to get the Ids pleasures but to be reasonable and bear the long-term consequences in mind. (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2) The Ego denies gratification but the ego must cope with this conflicting force. To undertake its work of planning, thinking and controlling the Id, the Ego uses some of the Ids libidinal energy (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2). Typically, adults fit into this category since maturity also aides in recognizing reality and compromising. However, if the ego is too strong one can become well-organized and rational but extremely boring and cold. The Superego is the last part of the mind to develop. It is often called the moral part of the mind (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2). The Superego becomes a structure of parental and societal values by storing and enforcing rules. It constantly strives for perfection and its power to enforce rules comes from its ability to create mental anxiety. The Superego has two subsystems: Ego Ideal and Conscience. The Ego Ideal provides rules for good behavior, and standards of excellence towards which the Ego must strive. (Wilderdom.com, 2008, pp. 1-2). The Ego ideal is basically what the childs parents approve of or value. So, a parents proper guidance is greatly needed for one to possess these values. Therefore, these values will serve as their conscience throughout life. However, if ones superego is not balanced may feel guilty most of the time and feel the need to be perfect beyond reality.

This mold can grow on paper, cotton and wood products.Memnoniella can develop toxins which are harmfu l to animals and humans. Stachybotrys is a slimy, blackish which is referred to as toxic black mold. Like Mennoniella it can produce toxins and be harmful to your health. Stachybotrys is found in the back of walls and ceilings. This type of mold can cause cancer, asthma and headaches. Alternaria is another common mold found in home. This is an allergic mold. It can also be found on soils and plants. If you inhale this type of mold it can cause you to have asthmatic reactions, hay fever and various allergies.Some of the health risks involved is respiratory problems such as wheezing and asthma attacks. Nasal and sinus congestion or dry hacking cough is a sign of mold. Another issue is eye irritation such as burning, watery or redness. There can also be nose of throat irritation such as sneezing or bloody noses. Some skin irritation can cause such as hives or rashes. And another problem that can result from mold is nervous system problems such as headaches, memory loss, mood changes an d aches and pains. Mold can grow 24 to 48 hours after exposure to water so it is important that you clean up right away if a flood occurs.Making sure you have the right equipment is important . Cleanup materials is important such as disinfected products. And protection from exposure is another important tool to keep in mind 4.
